Born in 1978 in Niimi, Okayama Prefecture in Japan, Ryo Kato completed his training in drawing and painting in high school and private school, Okayama (1995 – 1998). In 1998 followed a nine-month stay in Paris and move to Berlin. From 2001 to 2005 Ryo Kato studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) with Professor Wolfgang Petrick. In 2006 he was a master student at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) with Professor Daniel Richter.
Already during his studies he had his first exhibitions in Germany. In 2012 he was awarded first place in the Ishi Prize in Japan and in 2013 one of his paintings was included in the Okayama Prefectural Museum. Then in 2015, the Prefectural Museum purchased another work. He is a member of the Darmstadt Secession and was awarded its sponsorship prize. In his work he deals intensively with the theme of environmental degradation.
