Lukas Köllner, born in Düsseldorf in 1991, currently lives and works in Mönchengladbach. He graduated from the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2021 and has since participated in various institutional exhibitions in the Rhineland. He is known for his large-format, vividly colored figure paintings in oil, which explore the unconscious of human nature and combine traditional techniques and materials with urban art, expressionism, pop culture, and art historical references. Köllner’s artistic practice encompasses comic-like, surreal oil paintings and expressive ink drawings. His work is characterized by the fusion of painting and drawing. Traces of drawings can often be found in his paintings, deliberately blurring the boundaries between the two media to highlight the complexity of our modern age. His works often depict dreamlike urban landscapes populated by ghostly figures, exploring the unconscious aspects of human nature and resilience. The artist’s works are characterized by a naive, expressive, surreal painting style. Köllner creates vivid group images that captivate the viewer with their unique color combinations and characters, giving rise to mysterious narratives. A notable example of this is his installation at the Museum Schloss Rheydt, where he exhibited “Im Zirkel der Fliesentisch-Nekromanten” (In the Circle of the Tile Table Necromancers). This painting explores the origins of human projections, myths, and dogmas. Lukas Köllner has participated in various institutional exhibitions in the Rhineland in recent years.
