Ralf Koenemann

Ralf Koenemann (born in Essen in 1961) is a renowned contemporary painter, best known for his monumental, expressive depictions of animals and landscapes. His works masterfully navigate the boundary between precise figuration and gestural abstraction.

Motifs: At the heart of his work are mighty large animals such as elephants, gorillas, polar bears, buffalo and rhinos, which radiate an archaic power and an enormous presence.Experimental mixed media: He combines water-soluble and solvent-based paints (such as acrylic, bitumen, boat varnish and concrete paint). The deliberate repulsive reactions between the materials create unpredictable textures. Tactile application of paint: By mixing in ash, sand or pigments, he creates relief-like, vibrant surfaces. He works with pouring techniques, drip-and-drop methods and coarse, expressive brushstrokes. Large formats: His mostly monumental canvases demand distance and respect from the viewer due to their physical size and emotional intensity.

Education: From 1980 to 1984, he was a student of the painter Günter Sponheuer. He subsequently studied at the University of Essen under Prof. László Lakner until 1989. Freelance career: He has been working as a freelance artist in Essen since 1989. International presence: His works are regularly presented at major art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe. He exhibits in numerous galleries in Germany as well as in France, Switzerland and  South Korea.
